Friends Fighting Cancer
We are all touched by cancer in some way.
Last fall I sat next to Jim and his family at the Ride for the Roses dinner in Austin, Texas. Jim had been undergoing treatment for the fourth time in over ten years. Jim was frail and no longer able to stand on his own. He looked much older than his forty years - nothing like the healthy, vibrant young man who had participated in countless previous LAF challenges.
Jim's older brother, eating with us that night, was in remission after his own battle. They were both reeling from the stunning news that their sister had just been diagnosed with breast cancer.
Seeing the brothers together at dinner that night with their children was both inspiring and heartbreaking. It was apparent that the family knew their time with Jim was limited. Unfortunately, Jim lost his battle earlier this year.
I will never forget that experience. When he should have been home resting, Jim showed up. And, although he appeared to be losing his battle, Jim was by no means done with the fight, for he had two siblings whom he could still help through LAF.
LAF provides a ray of hope, helping families across the nation deal with cancer of all types. LAF not only funds research, but it also provides amazing care packages, telephone hotlines and advice to family and friends as we support those in treatment.
Whether you can donate five dollars or five hundred dollars, every single dollar helps the LAF carry out its mission to eliminate cancer, and to find more humane ways of treatment. I have seen first hand how LAF staff have provided inspiration and hope in the darkest of times. Please help place cancer into the "curable" category.
